Storytelling is something that crops up time and time again on this show. And to be honest, that's because it's fundamental to the way we communicate. When we abandon logical, fact based communication and embrace emotional narrative, we're better able to get our message across and influence others. Now this is nothing new, Jesus knew the power of story and today brands and businesses use the power of story, but what I'm interested in is how WE as individuals can tap into the power of story. And it was this search that led me to buy Lisa Cron
's book, Wired for Story: The Writer's Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence
. When I discovered this book, I knew I had to read it. And then when I started reading it, I was hooked - Lisa sure walks her walk! But even though the book is written for writers, I found a ton of really useful stuff in it that I could apply in my life but I was curious as to what Lisa would think about applying what she talks about to us as individuals, so I got in touch with her to get her on the show... AND SHE SAID YES!!!
Now, if you've read Lisa's book, you'll know what I mean when I say that you get a real sense of who Lisa is when you read the book - her personality just bounces off the page and I knew that she would make a fantastic guest. And boy was I right! She has this fabulously, energetic but hypnotic voice that reminds me of Linda Fiorentino (and weirdly, she looks a bit like her too!). You will just love listening to what she has to say... During our chat Lisa shares some brilliant story insights including
- why we are wired for story
- why story is such a big deal for all of us
- why it's necessary for survival. yes really!
- what makes a great story
- how we can make our own stories more compelling
- why if we didn't have story, we wouldn't be able to make decisions
